About

On Oct. 4, 2010, The University of British Columbia forged a formal partnership with the Max Planck Society, Germany’s foremost basic research institution and home to 32 Nobel prizes. The “Max Planck Gesellschaft – University of British Columbia Center for Quantum Materials” provides a forum for interdisciplinary cooperation between physicists, chemists, and materials scientists working in the field of quantum phenomena in complex materials. From 2011 to 2017, Science Co-op Programs had fifty two talented students participate in these research opportunities under this collaboration. On April 25, 2017, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) has formally joined the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Max Planck Society in advancing quantum materials research. This new partnership has expanded and created the “Max Planck – UBC – UTokyo Centre for Quantum Materials”. Our co-op students are thrilled to continue participating in these exciting research projects on three continents.

Under this collaboration, the UBC Science Co-op students had participated at various Max Planck Institutes including Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids and Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society; as well as University of Tokyo.
